FAQ on Digital Starter Panels

What is IP3 DSP ?
IP3 Digital Starter Panel (DSP) performs the same basic functionalities of any normal starter, providing Auto-Off-Manual (AOM) mode control. Difference lies with the use of microprocessor controller (IP3 Panel Controller) for operation of the starter.

What are the advantageous ?

Being microprocessor-based, all the I/O status of the starter are electronically monitored and controlled. Apart from the normal Auto-Off-Manual (AOM) mode control functionalities, additional features afforded by the microprocessor include -- real-time clock, 7-day timer schedule with calendar, fieldbus network for remote monitoring and control from Master PLC/ PC.

What happen in case of failure ?
As standard, all IP3 DSP are wired with Manual bypass that allows the user to operate the equipment in case of controller failure.

What kind of starters ?

IP3 DSP is suitable for all kinds of motor starters - DOL/ SD/ AT/ Soft Starter/ VSD/ Relay control.

What about metering ?

The 3-phase model of IP3 DSP (E series) is equipped with energy metering capability that can measure the electrical supply to the starter, such as Voltage, Ampere, kW, kVars, kVA, Power Factor, kWHR, Frequency.

BAS Implementation ? Using IP3 DSP for ACMV equipment will reduce cost of ownership in BAS implementation by as much as 50%. To implement the BAS, simply connect the fieldbus network (of ACMV equipment) to the Master PLC/ Central PC.

No additional BAS Hardware is required.

Energy Management ?

The IP3 DSP system is perhaps the only BAS that has integrated energy management as standard feature. With energy management, building owners can visualize and implement strategies for saving energy. Some features and capabilities of IP3 BAS include the following.
  • Schedules of operation for the ACMV equipment so that energy savings can be realized when the building spaces are unoccupied.
  • Optimal start so that the equipment can be turned on/ off at an appropriate time to ensure space set points are achieved before occupation.
  • Monitor energy usage of ACMV equipment and in conjunction with appropriate energy savings software to offer economizing control based on temperature calculations and/or CO2 set point control.
  • During peak demand, cycle off non-essential equipment like water fountains.
  • Send alarms via email and SMS to alert building managers of developing problems and system failures.
  • Energy metering, allows Management companies to setup billing system of tenants for energy usage.

IP3e
The IP3 Panel Controller (Series E) is equipped with energy metering capabilities. And, for the first time provide building owner the capability to monitor energy consumption of individual ACMV equipment in the BAS system.

What kind of BAS Network ? IP3 DSP network is using CAN Fieldbus architecture. Capable of supporting up to 32 units of DSP in single network using 2P STP of 18/ 20 AWG cable size.
